FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hand of Interior Designer and Architect placing wood sample on Material Board

What services do you offer?

Our core service is full design and project execution, which means we select paint colors, finish materials, window treatments, furniture, bedding, etc — everything that might go into the space. This can be done for a single room or an entire home! In addition, we also offer consultative services. Sometimes you just need help picking out the right paint color or putting together a mood board for your space. If you later choose to utilize our full design services, your consultation fee can be credited into the project budget.

How would you describe your design style?

We're really versatile and enjoy most styles. We're comfortable designing in just about any home. Because we've worked in a lot of ~100 year old homes around Milwaukee, many of our projects have taken on a "historic elegance" kind of vibe that is both elevated and comfortable. We've also done modern projects, and used mid-century and even some art deco elements. We've designed urban homes and lakehouse retreats. The common thread through it all is comfortable, livable spaces that work for modern life but are anchored by a timeless traditional foundation.

How much do interior design services cost?

The cost of our services depends on the scope of the project. A simple color/style consultation can be offered for a flat fee. Full design and project execution is generally based on the total project budget. The cool thing is that our vendor relationships and access to preferred pricing allows us to offset a good chunk of our fee. In addition, our project management expertise and close contractor relationships mean your project will run smoothly and stay on budget – avoiding the hidden cost and headache of project delays.

Can you work within my budget?

Certainly. We’ve worked with budgets of all sizes including some pretty tight ones. Good design isn’t about spending tons of money – that would be easy. It’s about working with what you’ve got and making smart strategic decisions to achieve the best result. We love big fancy projects, but our services are accessible to nearly everyone.

When should I hire you during my renovation or build?

It's almost never too early to start the process with us because we can consult on layout decisions that are not so easy to change later. We're not architects but we can often lend some ideas that help you get the space you want. Once the walls are up and the mechanicals are installed, it's a lot more expensive to make any layout changes – better to do it on paper first! If you're already well underway and are thinking you might want some help – fear not! We can walk into just about any situation and make the most of it. Don't hesitate to ask – we can almost certainly help.

How does the design process work—from concept to completion?

It all starts with a conversation. About you, your space, your needs and wants. We get a feel for your home's inherent style and how you'd like it to function better or just feel differently. We get an idea of your budget, desired timeframe and level of construction you're able/willing to tolerate. With all of those details in mind, we'll craft an overview of recommendations that fits in your budget. If you're on board with the concept, we'll dig in and create a more detailed, room-by-room outline of everything we'll need to execute the vision. With approval of that scope of work, we'll get started sourcing products, scheduling contractors, and coordinating deliveries. We'll manage your project hands-on with care and attention to detail, and communicate with you often. We will generally bill you for work in several draws throughout the project, according to work that has been completed or materials that have been delivered. We'll arrange the delivery and/or assembly of any and all furnishings, put on the final touches, and deliver your dream space! After the project is complete, we don't disappear. We're here for anything you may need and we warranty all of our projects for your peace of mind.

How long does a typical project take?

It all depends on the size of the project, but we can give a few examples. A single to-the-studs bathroom renovation takes 3-6 weeks. A gut kitchen renovation takes 4-8 weeks. Bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms are typically 1-2 weeks. If you're doing multiple rooms these timeframes can run somewhat concurrently.

What should I bring to our first meeting?

Starting an inspiration board is a great place to start. You can use Pinterest, Houzz, or even a Google Drive folder of photos for this. Just start collecting stuff that you like, no matter how random. We'll make sense of it all! For our first meeting it's also important to have an idea of your desired budget and timeframe. From there we can start to zero in on the scope of work we can tackle.

Why should I hire an interior designer at all?

We can't speak for all designers - some might have great design vision but lack technical construction knowledge or project management skills. Some might be great at what they do but require you to buy from their exorbitantly priced vendors.
Our expertise and experience makes for a better finished product, with minimal project headaches, at an attainable price point. And we know you'll really enjoy your experience working with us!

Can you incorporate my existing furniture or personal items into the design?

Probably- it depends on the space and the items you want to include, but this is YOUR space, after all! We'll offer advice and opinions on what works or doesn't work design-wise. If something is really important to you to include, we can almost always work with it.

I hate my (insert name of despised space) and want to set it on fire... can you help me love it?

Yes... I think. Let's just... set the matches riiiight over here and... OK.  Sooooo, there's a really good chance that what's not working for you in your space can be solved. It's very common that people are not quite able to see the solutions or the "after" picture in their mind when they have been living in the space as-is for so long. Once we show you what's possible, you'll be ready to grab your sledgehammer!

Do you two ever disagree on design choices?

Of course! (We are married, after all.) The good news is that our debates usually lead to an even better idea than either of us had alone. We often have different ideas for the same space, but have learned through many projects to trust each other and the results always work out beautifully!

What’s your guilty-pleasure design trend?

Lauren: Wallpaper is all the rage now but I've been into it for 15 years! I don't think I'll ever stop loving wallpaper.
Adam: Luxury coastal. Like a villa perched on the hills of some Caribbean island or the whole Tulum style of architecture. It's my daydream.

Will you come to (insert town/city here) to do my project?

Probably. Let's talk about it. Depending on the scope of work and what you need from us in terms of project supervision, we can usually do projects outside of our normal SE Wisconsin home area. We've worked all over the Midwest.
